The University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) capped off its 91st Graduation weekend on Sunday, June 30th, 2024, with a commencement ceremony at its scenic Maracas Valley campus. The ceremony marked the culmination of a weekend-long celebration that began with a Consecration Service on Friday evening, followed by Baccalaureate Services and an Evening of Tributes on Sabbath Day.
Dr. Kern Tobias, President of the Caribbean Union Conference and Chair of the USC Board, opened the Commencement Ceremony by reiterating the Conference’s unwavering support for the University's mission and acknowledging the partnership with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. His message challenged graduates to pursue excellence in their future endeavours.
University President Dr. Colwick Wilson, in his welcome address, expressed his pride in the '489 graduates...of Miracle Valley.' He emphasized the University's unique diversity, highlighting the presence of students from over 16 faiths and 20 countries within the graduating class of 2024. Graduates hailed from the University's five undergraduate schools, the School of Graduate Studies, and six academic schools total, with the School of Sciences, Technology, and Allied Health boasting the largest number.
Dr. The Honorable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, delivered the Commencement address. The Prime Minister underscored the Government's commitment to education and urged Trinidad & Tobago graduates to maximize the opportunities afforded by this investment. He also encouraged a spirit of national and regional pride and solidarity, emphasizing the importance of Caribbean integration. His 'recognition' of USC as a valuable regional institution alongside the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the West Indies cricket team resonated with the audience. Prime Minister Rowley also challenged graduates to become agents of positive social change, tackling issues such as crime reduction.
