In response to a significant surge in gang-related violence, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has declared a State of Emergency (SOE) effective December 30, 2024. This measure grants law enforcement agencies enhanced powers to arrest suspects without warrants and conduct searches without prior notice.
The decision follows a particularly violent December, with 68 murders recorded, bringing the total number of homicides in 2024 to an unprecedented 623. National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds described the situation as an "epidemic" and emphasized the need for immediate action to protect public safety
While the SOE allows for increased police and military presence, there will be no public curfew, and daily life is expected to continue with minimal disruption. Authorities urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement efforts. Please find the Government Notice here.
Psalm 46:1 reminds us: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." We pray for peace, safety, and a swift resolution to the violence plaguing our communities. May the Lord guide and protect us, granting us the strength and courage to face each day with hope and grace.
