The Bible teaches that God created the Earth and everything in it. As Seventh-day Adventists, we believe in the Genesis account of creation, recognizing God’s intelligent and loving design. Earth Day serves as a reminder to be good stewards of the planet. The theme for Earth Day 2024 (April 22nd, 2024) is “Planet vs. Plastics,” and addresses a pressing environmental issue of our time: plastic pollution.
We should care for the environment, use resources efficiently, and promote cleanliness and sustainability. Jesus Himself cares about our stewardship of the Earth. Revelation 11:18 speaks of His coming to “destroy those who destroy the earth.” While caring for the Earth is important, our primary focus remains on saving people. As Adventists, we emphasize sharing the gospel and preparing for Christ’s return. In 2 Peter 3:10-13, we are reminded that this present sin-filled Earth will eventually pass away, but we look forward to new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells.
Earth Day need not conflict with our faith. We can appreciate the beauty of God’s creation while keeping our eyes fixed on the Creator. By celebrating Earth Day, we acknowledge God’s handiwork and express gratitude for His blessings. In conclusion, we can participate in Earth Day by being responsible stewards of the environment, all while keeping our focus on sharing God’s love and preparing for His return.
